OUGD101 - Alphabet Soup for Parnter (Final Crit)

Which personality traits did you choose to respond to and apply the typeface to?

I mainly chose to look at my partner's interest in a particular artist - Brandon Boyd; I took inspiration from the style he works with and the typography he uses, both of which coincidentally have connotations of Mexico, which another of the four words I took from the interview with my partner. Sixties, was another word I incorporated into my typeface, as it my partners favourite decade, as she likes a lot of the music and art from the era. The final word I looked to use was invisibility as this would be her chosen super power.

What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface?

I decided to take a large amount of inspiration from Brandon Boyd's work, as it was apparent, during the interview how much of an inspiration he was to my partner. I worked with the pattern styles he has previously used, before amalgamating them into a unique patter, which was suitable to work the letter forms into. I chose to incorporate her three favourite colours into the patterns, to add a feeling of the Sixties as well as adding a personal touch. The decision not to use a keyline or solid areas within the letterforms, was to suggest the idea of invisibility within the design.

In what ways are the results effective?

All of the four words that I chose to represent my partner are interpretable in the detail when viewed up close, but each letter is a crisp letter form when viewed from afar. All the letters are legible and readable when put into the name badge.

What personality traits do you interpret from the typeface designed to represent me?

My interest in traditional style tattoos, by using the style of letterforms that are often seen the that context.

Describe what I think of the typeface:

The typeface is entirely legible and readable on the name badge. It clearly shows the context that it is meant to represent. I like how the typeface has been worked into lowercase, but the obvious elements from Tattoo type are still apparent.

In what ways is it (in)effective of representing me?

The typeface was effective because it was bold, legible, and definitely communicated what my partner planned it to, in order to accurately represent my personality. However it was ineffective where the roses aren't obvious from a distance and there are some issues with series design, particularly with placement of the roses.
